The “evil eye” is a supernatural belief in a curse caused by a malevolent gaze. It dates back to around 5,000 years ago and it is estimated that around 40% of the world’s population believe in the evil eye. In the 6th century BC it appeared on Chalcidean vases known as “eye cups”, as a type of protective magic. It is found in many cultures in the Mediterranean region as well as West Asia and Central Asia, with the belief that the evil eye will cause misfortune or injury. The Egyptian eye of Horus is a similar symbol of protection and good health, while the Greek amulet of the eye protects against malevolent gazes.
