Athena and Poseidon, claiming the same city, climbed the sacred rock of the Acropolis and before the Athenians they dueled to decide who would get it. The winner would be whichever of the two offered the most beautiful gift. Poseidon struck the hill with his trident and immediately a spring of salty – so not very useful – water gushed forth. Athena’s gift was an olive tree that provided the city with food, oil and timber. Thus, Athena won the duel and the city was named Athens.
