In the ancient theatre, the actors and chorus members performed wearing prosopeia, i.e. theatrical masks. By wearing a mask, the actors portrayed a character, a god, a hero, etc., without showing their own face. It also allowed performers who played two or more roles, male and female, in the same play, to disguise themselves with ease.
