Legend has it that Hades fell in love with Persephone and took her with him to the Underworld. Zeus ordered the beautiful girl to be released, so Hades, hoping not to lose Persephone, presented her with a pomegranate. The girl was enchanted by the sweetness of the seeds of this fruit and returned forever to the Underworld, where she lived for three months each year. The gemstone garnet takes its name from the Latin granatus, meaning seed, due to the stone’s similarity to the color and luster of pomegranate seeds.
