Agate is a beautiful and ancient gemstone that is found in various colors and is known for its characteristic color banding. Its name comes from the river Achates (now Dirillo) in Sicily in the area of which it is said to have been discovered. The use of agate in decoration was widespread in Ancient Greece, in jewellery and in the seal stones of Greek warriors.
